Credit Bureau Fraud Victim Assistance

Online instant credit reports are useful for checking the information of all three national credit reporting agencies in one step. The credit bureaus also provide telephone numbers for reporting fraud, and can provide free credit reports to you in the event that fraud is suspected:

Federal Investigators

The Federal Trade Commission is the primary federal agency dealing with issues of identity theft, and identity theft education.  They have a secure online form for reporting ID Theft to the FTC. The special phone number for this purpose is 1-877-IDTHEFT.

Social Security Number misuse, and social security benefits fraud: SSA Office of the Inspector General: 1-800-269-0271

 

The Department of Justice prosecutes federal identity theft cases and has publications of interest.


FBI local field offices investigate cases of identity theft.
Identity fraud investigations with regard to federal income tax and income tax refunds: 1-800-829-0433 and tax-related consumer assistance: 1-877-777-4778.  The IRS identity theft web page tells you how to identify phony email, and how to report it.

Theft of US Mail and mail fraud: U.S. Postal Inspection Service (or your local postmaster.)

For identity theft in connection with stock market and brokerage transactions, contact the SEC: 202-942-7040.

If a fraudulent bankruptcy was filed under your name, contact the U.S. Trustee in the appropriate district. You may need an attorney to resolve the difficult issue of removing the bankruptcy.

Student Identity Theft and Student Loan Fraud. The U.S. Department of Education 1-800-MISUSED

State and Local Governments 

Contact local law enforcement, or the state's Attorney General Office.
